Mutumbo to Hang Up Jersey After Playoffs Injury...

Dikembe Mutumbo injured his knee in game 2 of the Rockets' playoff series against the Portland Trail Blazers. An injury that's prompted Mutumbo to hint towards his retirement after an 18 year long career in the NBA.

"A preliminary examination revealed a knee strain and he was ruled out the rest of the game.Afterward in Houston's locker room, the 7-foot-2 veteran was on crutches and fighting back tears. 'Nobody ever thought they'd be carrying the big guy out like a wounded soldier,' he said. The 42-year-old will be examined by doctors in Houston on Wednesday" source

(n): Dang...I saw him get injured, but I didn't expect it to lead to this! I am sad for him, that's a pretty bad way to end a career...he could have been speaking out of emotion, but then again he is 42 years old...I'm sure he'll be inducted into the Hall of Fame some day...

(L): I LOVE Mutumbo!!! He was the first African in the NBA(at least the first one i knew of)!!! And he is the only NBA player to build a hospital in Africa to help the people in his country! On top of that he was an extraordinary player that has influenced the world greatly, not just in basketball, but in giving back to the community too. But at 42 I'm glad he is finally taking the time to rest and I wish him the best on his recovery!

Madden Officially Retires

John Madden announced his retirement today at the age of 73. It is rumored that he may go back to the Raiders where he started his career as their head coach many years ago, but Madden wouldn't be returning to a coaching position but more as a sort of advisor it seems. "Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He began
his pro career as a linebacker coach at Oakland in 1967 and was made head coach two years later, at 33 the youngest coach in what was then the American Football League. Madden led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl victory and retired in 1979

He joined CBS later that year. He worked at CBS until 1994 when the
network lost rights to broadcast NFL games, leading him to switch to Fox. He left Fox in 2002 to become the lead analyst for ABC's
"Monday Night Football" and joined NBC in 2006 when that network inaugurated a prime-time Sunday game. Madden won 16 Emmy Awards and became one of the most recognizable voices in television, mixing high-volume enthusiasm with serious analysis on the telestrator."

(n): I am seriously sad to learn that JM is hanging up the headphones. I know he's getting old and I totally understand his reasoning in that he'd be on the road for the entirety of the season...but I will trully miss his voice and enthusiasm...I wonder who will be able to fill his shoes. I also am happy to hear that he may become re affiliated with the Raiders! My 2nd favorite team definitely NEEDS HELP IN THE MANAGEMENT DEPT!!! Davis just isn't getting the job done there.

(L): Yea this is sad, but I am wondering why he didn't do it sooner! Does he really love sports that much, that he continued to work even though he could of just retired and been set for the rest of his life? He could of been fishing, or spending time with his kids or grandkids or meeting hot young girls and being their suga-daddy. But instead, he committed so much of his life to football and he is even thinking of continuing. He is a legend and always will be!

De La Hoya Retires

Oscar De La Hoya announced his retirement yesterday outside of the staples center...The LA AP Reports:

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Oscar De La Hoya stopped battling himself Tuesday, deciding after much internal turmoil to retire and end a career in which he won 10 world titles in six divisions and became boxing's most popular fighter.
He made his announcement at an outdoor plaza across the street from Staples Center, where a 7-foot bronze statue of the 36-year-old Golden Boy stands.
"I've come to the conclusion that it's over," the East Los Angeles native said before hundreds of fans, including comedian George Lopez and Oscar-nominated actor and former fighter Mickey Rourke. "It's over inside the ring for me."
De La Hoya retired four months after he was thoroughly beaten by Manny Pacquiao, his fourth loss in his last seven fights. He has not defeated a formidable opponent since Fernando Vargas in 2002. Age and diminished skills led to losses in recent years to Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
He won his last title in May 2006, beating Ricardo Mayorga in six rounds for the WBC 154-pound belt. He finished with a record of 39-6 and 30 knockouts...source

(n): Yeah, Pacquiao did sorta whoop his ass...but I must say I am sad to see this guy hang up his gloves...he opened up so many doors and cleared many paths for latino boxers...he's a true inspiration. (L): I used to think Oscar De La Hoya and the designer Oscar de la Renta were the same person for like a good month. haha, im glad that he was able to last so long and what not. I guess when the time comes, you have to just remember the goodtimes and call it quits.
